Champagne Classification

(Summary)

Échelle des Crus (ladder of growth)

These terms below are used as status and location of the villages the grapes have come from which makes the wines for the production of champagne. The term ‘Cru’ (literal translation as "growth") is used in France to illustrate a vineyard or a group of vineyards or winemaking villages. Both Grand Cru and Premier Cru originate from the Échelle des Cru system and this system was created in 1920. The Cru system ranks villages within the Champagne region according to their “terroirs” (or overall environments) and potential for grape harvest.

 Grand Cru

"Grand Cru" is the highest tier of the champagne classification system. There are only 17 designated villages where the grapes are grown, and there are less than 9% of all the planted vineyard land in Champagne have received a 100% Grand Cru rating. A bottle may only use the term ‘Grand Cru’ if 100% of the grapes used are from Grand Cru villages.

Traditional Cork Sealing Method

Champagnes were originally sealed with a cork stopper with strings. The stopper was originally secured to the bottle with string, as seen with Champagne Blanc Nori, typically hemp string, which was fastened by hand, with the bottle held between the legs. This fastening of the cork using a knotted loop remained a risky business, even when reinforced string and/or steel wire was used. However, Champagne F. Barbier continues this tradition.
